To 3D Or Not To 3D

The new trend when making movies is to use new technology to make them into a three dimensional (3D). I personally find the growing trend of making a 3D movie to be quite annoying because it is getting to be that all the movies that are coming out every week is in three dimensions. And I cannot see what the fascination is with making movies in 3D. Here are some reasons why I don't really like 3D movies :

The Quality

Having a movie in 3D doesn't really make that big of a difference in the quality of the movie and it doesn't make things really pop out at you, just adds a little more definition which would have looked fine even without it. Most people going to a 3D movie, expect to see something coming right at them so that it would seem you could reach out and actually touch it, which I have only seen in certain movies at theme parks that are more of a 3D ride than an actual movie.

The Glasses

Having a movie in 3D requires that everyone wear a special type of glasses in order to see it in three dimensions. While I am glad that the glasses have evolved from the red and blue ones that I used to use when I would read the old 3D comic books when I was younger, the new ones are not a whole lot better.  I find the glasses annoying because I don't normally wear glasses when watching a movie so it just tends to get in the way. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for people who need corrective lenses to see and try to see a 3D movie who now have to wear two pairs of glasses. Also every time that I have worn the 3D glasses it has always given me a headache so I try to avoid seeing a movie in 3D movie as much as possible. Also they look a lot like Harry Potter glasses so they are not the most appealing glasses to wear.

The Money

I think that one of the main reasons why movie producers are making their newer and highly anticipated in three dimensions, and one of the biggest reasons why I don't go to them, is because of the few extra dollars that they are able to sell the tickets for. With most theaters charging around ten to twelve dollars just to see a regular 2D movie, having the three dimensional verion of the same exact movie is chance for the theater to bump up the price of admission an extra two or three bucks just because it has this little added bonus. Now this may not seem like a lot of money at first, after you add in all the other money you will have to spend for a good time at the movies, and especially if you consider how many times I like to go to the movies, two or three bucks adds up.

  1. I think it's true that 3D films are currently not too exciting, but I am very optimistic of the future. With the invention of 3D cameras, I think we are on the right path to amazing 3D technology and I think that your dissatisfaction along with others will help fuel the industry onto that path.

  2. I agree. 3D movies are extremely overrated (with the exception of course of Jackass 3D). They usually give me a headache, are too expensive and it always bothers me when I am watching a movie and there is a pointless scene that was meant to look cool in 3D but looks odd and misplaced for non-3D viewers. Even though I have negative feelings for 3D I thought it would have been interesting to watch Spy Kids 4D. Then someone told me that it was just a 3D movie and they gave you a scratch and sniff card to sniff when you were prompted on screen and I was disappointed once again.
